A Burnaby man is dead after a fatal shooting in the 7900-block of Wickham Place Wednesday afternoon.

Burnaby RCMP confirmed they were called to a report of shots fired just after 12 noon.

“When members arrived on scene they found that one male, a Burnaby resident, had been shot. The man was transported by EHS to hospital and has since succumbed to his injuries,” Cpl. Daniela Panesar said.

“The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has been deployed and will be working in partnership with the Burnaby RCMP.”

She said the shooting does not appear to be a random act, while added: “The information that is available to investigators at this time is limited.”

“Police are currently in the evidence gathering phase, no further information will be provided at this time,” Panesar said.

“This is a tragedy.”

Anyone with information about the murder is asked to call the IHIT tipline at 1-877-551-4448 or email at ihittipline@rcmp-grc.gc.ca

But later this afternoon, news has broken that the murder may be related to a dispute between some employees at the City of Vancouver. We are trying to get more information on this.

Vancouver Police Sgt. Randy Fincham just issued a statement (5:45 p.m.) saying: “Due to a threat against a City of Vancouver employee, the City and the police have taken the unusual steps of securing a number works yards and job sites. The police do not believe that there is a risk to the general public at this time. Further information will be provided when it becomes available.”

The shooting was the second in Burnaby in less than 12 hours.

About 1 a.m. Burnaby RCMP responded to a report of shots fired in the 2700-block of Ellerslie Avenue near a townhouse complex.

“Upon attendance, officers located evidence consistent with shots being fired in that area,” Panesar said in an earlier release.

She said none of the three victims inside a vehicle at the scene were injured.

“Unfortunately, the shooter fled before anyone could record the licence plate. Witnesses reported the suspect vehicle was either a tan or black sedan,” she said.

While this investigation is in its early stages, there is no indication at this time that the incident is related to the activity presently occurring in other jurisdictions. The occupants inside the vehicle have no apparent ties to gang activity, Panesar said.
